Drying cocoa beans is the activity this stereograph records on Dominica, one of the Windward Islands in the British West Indies. Cocoa was an important export crop on the island in the early twentieth century, and harvested beans were fermented and then dried before shipment. The card, issued around 1906 by the Standard Scenic Company under the name of W.S. Smith, was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the scene a sense of depth for home viewers. Its caption presents the work as one of the island's industries, making it a record of agricultural labor that was central to the local economy.
