Tent shelters on the race course mark this card as a view of how Kingston's survivors lived in the weeks after the earthquake of January 14, 1907. With many houses and public buildings destroyed, open grounds like the race course filled with families who had nowhere else to go. The stereograph was issued by the H.C. White Company, a firm known for mass-produced stereo views sold to households and schools in the early twentieth century. Viewed through a stereoscope, the pairs of images give a sense of depth and of the crowded, makeshift camp that the printed caption alone cannot convey.
