Sweet sellers working a Kingston street are the subject of this stereograph, a small trade that would have been part of everyday life in the Jamaican capital around 1899. Stereo cards like this one held two nearly identical photographs side by side, which a stereoscope merged into a single image with depth. Views of colonial port cities such as Kingston were popular with armchair travelers, and the vendors, their goods and the people around them offer a record of ordinary commercial life at the end of the nineteenth century.
