Orville Wright sits for this portrait taken in December 1946, two years before his death, long after the brothers' 1903 flight at Kitty Hawk had made the family name famous. The Library of Congress holds it as a single photographic print credited to photographer Dave Lutes, though the catalog notes that its date and details come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified. By the mid-1940s Wright was a quiet elder statesman of aviation, often photographed as the surviving brother who had watched the field of flight grow from wood-and-fabric machines into jet-age aircraft.
