Few newspapers noticed the Wright brothers' first powered flight when it happened, and this print preserves an early report: a headline from the Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk, dated December 18, 1903. The notice came the day after Orville and Wilbur Wright made four brief flights at Kill Devil Hills, near Kitty Hawk, on North Carolina's Outer Banks, with the first covering about 120 feet in 12 seconds. Because the story was small and often garbled in print, the clipping shows how quietly the achievement first entered the public record. The details here come from an old caption card and have not been checked against other copies.
