A stereograph from about 1902 shows a carabao, the water buffalo of the Philippines, carrying a rider, a pairing that was a familiar sight to American soldiers and civilians arriving in the islands after the Spanish-American War. The card was issued by C.H. Graves through The Universal Art Co. and numbered 84 in its series, the kind of commercial stereo view that brought distant places into American parlors through a viewer. The carabao was the main draft and transport animal of rural Filipino farms and was prized for its strength in wet fields, so a photograph of one used as a mount offers a glimpse of everyday island life as Americans saw it.
