Titled "El Dorado in Sacramento," this wood engraving depicts a gambling scene in the Gold Rush boomtown, where miners and merchants who had come west in search of fortune often wagered their earnings at card tables. It appeared in *The Illustrated London News* on June 5, 1852, on page 437, reflecting British fascination with California after the 1848 gold discovery drew tens of thousands of migrants. Sacramento, at the confluence of the Sacramento and American rivers, served as a supply and trading hub for the mining region, and the image presents the city as a place where fortunes were made and lost quickly.
