Raisin harvesting in California was a fast-growing agricultural business around 1900, when grape growers in the Central Valley dried their crops in the open sun before packing them. In this view, the work is the focus: workers gather fruit and spread it to cure on the ground, the routine that turned fresh grapes into a shelf-stable crop. The Universal Photo Art Company issued many inexpensive views of American farm life at the time, and this one is worth studying for its record of hand labor in the orchards and drying fields.
