This wood engraving shows Native people from the Mission Indian communities of Southern California weaving baskets and twisting hair ropes, two crafts that continued among families who had lived near the former Spanish missions. It was made from a drawing by Frenzeny, the French-born illustrator who contributed scenes of the American West to *Harper's Weekly*, and it appeared in the magazine's October 20, 1877, issue on page 821. Print culture of the late 1870s often presented such work as picturesque, so the scene is worth reading with care: the craftsmanship is the subject, but the image was made for an eastern audience with its own assumptions about California and its peoples.
