Rows of orange trees recede into depth across this stereograph, taken on Lucky Baldwin's ranch in southern California. Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin, a mining speculator, acquired the Santa Anita tract in the 1870s and developed it into a showplace of orchards, vineyards and livestock. The card was issued around 1903 by the Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, a firm that mass-produced stereo views for home stereoscopes. Its depth effect was the point of the format, letting parlor viewers see distant farms as if they stood among the trees.
