Three constellations share this plate: Le Bouvier, the Ploughman, now called Boötes; Les Levriers, the two hounds of Canes Venatici; and Le Chevelure de Berenice, the Hair of Berenice, or Coma Berenices. The last takes its name from a legend about Queen Berenice II of Egypt, who is said to have offered her hair to the gods for her husband's safe return from war, after which it was placed among the stars. This engraving comes from a Paris star atlas of 1776, when charts like this served both as astronomical tools and as elegant objects for study and display. The figures are drawn to be read against the stars they name, so the pictures and the sky map work together.
