Here a mounted rider takes center stage, a figure drawn for the cover of a cheap paperback in the Munro's Ten Cent Novels series. The cover is named for Kit Carson, the scout Christopher "Kit" Carson (1809-1868), whose real exploits across the West were soon folded into popular legend. Dime novels like these were sold cheaply to working-class readers and built a wide market for frontier adventure stories. The catalog date, 185-, is approximate, so the cover likely dates from the 1850s or early 1860s. Wood engraving was the standard method for such cover art, and the image shows how publishers used a single dramatic figure to sell the story.
