Santa Barbara Mission sits on a rise above the city and has been called the Queen of the Missions since the Franciscans founded it in 1786. Don Ollis's 1947 view captures the site in the years when California was embracing its Spanish colonial heritage, and the whitewashed walls and twin bell towers had become emblems of that past. The mission remains an active parish staffed by Franciscan friars, a religious presence that dates back to its founding. That long, unbroken use is what makes the scene worth a second look.
