Fresno, in California's San Joaquin Valley, was the center of the state's raisin trade, and this stereograph shows grapes laid out in the sun to dry. Growers spread the fruit on trays between the vines and turned it by hand, a labor-intensive method that depended on hot, dry weather. Issued as a stereo card around 1913, the image was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the scene a sense of depth that flat photographs could not offer. The date is approximate, since the original caption information has not been verified.
