The subject is the Mount of the Holy Cross in central Colorado, a peak whose northern face holds two snow-filled gullies that form a large white cross, visible into late summer. Thomas Moran, who had joined federal survey expeditions to the West, made this etching in 1888, drawing on the mountain's fame as a natural wonder. The plate combines etching with roulette engraving for tonal depth, and the small deer sketched in the margin, called a remarque, marks this as an early impression of the work.
