Peter Moran's etching takes its title from a line of pastoral sentiment, "When sunset guilds the western hills," and adds a small sketch in the margin, called a remarque, of a man plowing and a woman milking. Moran, a painter and etcher who was the brother of Thomas Moran, often turned to farm animals and rural labor, and the plate shows that interest in the daily work of the land. The print was submitted as a copyright deposit, a common route by which American prints entered the Library's collections in the 1890s. The catalog's subject tags for cattle and art works are from an older caption card and have not been independently checked.
