The summit tunnel that the Central Pacific Railroad cut through granite at its western summit, 7,042 feet up, was among the most demanding works in the Sierra Nevada. This stereograph, number 197 in a series on the railroad's mountain scenes, shows the bore before it was finished, with raw rock and the work around it still visible. The tunnel was driven by hand drill and black powder, largely by Chinese laborers working toward the middle from both ends, and it was not completed until 1867. Stereo views like this one were sold to a public eager to follow the railroad's progress across the mountains.
