The title's invented word, "tongariferous," is part of the comic vocabulary that gives this 1837 woodcut its flavor and signals a tall tale rather than a report of a real encounter. It appeared as an illustration in *Crockett's Almanack of Wild Sports in the West, Life in the Backwoods, Sketches of Texas, and Rows on the Mississippi*, one of the frontier-humor almanacs published under Davy Crockett's name, which mixed boasting, exaggeration, and sporting yarns. Such pages played on readers' appetite for stories of the backwoods and the Southwest, where battles with wild animals were a stock boast. The record's subject tags also list women, alligators, and humor, though its catalog data is noted as unverified.
