I have not yet begun to fight" is the reply John Paul Jones is said to have given when the British captain of HMS Serapis asked whether he would strike his colors, during the night battle off Flamborough Head in September 1779. Jones's own ship, the Bonhomme Richard, was battered and sinking, yet he kept fighting and took the Serapis. This c1913 halftone reproduces a painting by Henry Master, according to a caption card that the record marks as unverified. Halftone printing turned paintings into dot-patterned images that could appear alongside text, and it was widely used in early twentieth-century books and magazines.
