The sitter is Irish tenor John McCormack, pictured in a portrait dated around 1912 and made by the New York firm James & Bushnell. Born in Athlone in 1884, McCormack had become one of the most admired singers of his era, known for his warm, clear voice and his performances of Irish ballads in concert halls and opera houses on both sides of the Atlantic. Studio portraits of performers like this one were widely reproduced in programs, magazines and sheet music, which helped build the public image of the star singer. The date and attribution come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
