Among the portraits in Duyckinck's *National Portrait Gallery of Eminent Americans*, this engraving reproduces a painting by Alonzo Chappel of John Jacob Astor, the German-born merchant who built a fortune in the American fur trade and later in New York real estate. The Duyckinck volumes appeared in the 1860s to present notable figures of the nation's past through engraved likenesses, so the print looks back to Astor's era rather than recording him from life. The title's dates, 1864 to 1912, do not match Astor's lifespan of 1763 to 1848, and the record itself flags its data as unverified, so those dates should be read with caution.
