Voltaire, the French writer whose satire and essays made him one of the Enlightenment's best-known voices, is shown here in a lithograph after a painting by Louis Carrogis, who worked under the name Carmontelle. The print carries a copyright line from G. Barrie & Son, a Philadelphia firm that issued reproductions of artworks, and it dates to about 1900. Prints like this one often carried an admired older portrait to a new audience, so the image records both the eighteenth-century likeness and the later taste for it.
