The Soo Locks at Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, carry ships around the rapids of the St. Marys River, where Lake Superior drops to Lake Huron. Vessels must be raised or lowered through the locks to continue their trips, and by the 1910s the Sault was one of the busiest waterways in the country, moving iron ore and grain. This c1915 view comes from A.E. Young of Soo, Michigan, who registered it for copyright that year. Pictures like this one record a working canal system at a time when Great Lakes shipping was expanding quickly.
