Passenger steamers gather at the Cascade Locks, the lock system that let boats get around the rapids on the Columbia River in Oregon. Completed in 1896, the locks gave river traffic a reliable route past water that had long broken up navigation between The Dalles and Portland. This stereo card, copyrighted by the H.C. White Co. and dated around 1906, was meant for viewing through a stereoscope, a popular parlor pastime of the era. The caption information is old and unverified, so the vessels and the name on the card should be checked against other sources.
