The title names two vessels, the Murray Hill and the Black Warrior, set against the Damariscotta River in midcoast Maine, a tidal waterway that has long supported fishing and shipping. The caption card ties the scene to the fishing industry, which fits a river whose shores and tidal flats have yielded oysters for generations. Around 1910, working boats were a common subject for photographers on the Maine coast, and pictures like this one recorded individual craft as much as the landscape. The print's Copyright Office number shows it was deposited for copyright registration, which is how it came to the Library of Congress.
