From the north bank of the Rappahannock, this view looks across the water at Fredericksburg, Virginia, a town that suffered heavy damage in the battle of December 1862. By February 1863 the Union army was camped on the same shore, and the river that had divided the two sides still lay between them and the town. The photograph belongs to the Brady Collection, the body of Civil War images linked to Mathew Brady's studio, and its catalog record places it among views of the war's battlefields.
