The title names the subject directly: a rabbi singing, which places the scene within the sung worship and chant of Jewish religious life. Todros Geller (1889-1949) made this wood engraving in 1942, and this is impression 5 of 12, signed and dated in pencil by the artist. Geller, who worked largely in Chicago and drew often on Jewish life and tradition, used the contrast of dark block and fine white line typical of wood engraving to give the figures a quiet, devotional weight. The Library of Congress holds it through the Pennell Fund.
