Rather than a scene, this lithograph presents an ornamented title page for *The Book of Common Prayer*, the liturgy of the Church of England that has shaped Anglican worship since the sixteenth century. It was issued in a London edition of 1844 from the publisher William Pickering, who was known in that period for carefully produced books. Decorated title pages like this one let devotional volumes announce their dignity before the reader reached the text, and lithography made such elaborate designs far more affordable to reproduce.
