Grotesques, the fantastical ornamental panels of twining vines, animals, masks, and hybrid figures, took their name from the underground Roman rooms, or "grottoes," where such decorations were found in the late 1400s. Agostino Veneziano, an engraver working in Rome in the early 1500s, reproduced these designs so that artists and craftsmen could copy them across Europe. This sheet is catalogued as Bartsch 583, a standard reference number that scholars use to identify the print. The caption card records no date, so the title's 1490 to 1540 range is the best guide to when the work was made.
