Atalanta, the huntress who would marry only a man who could outrun her, appears here alongside Meleager, the hero who in Ovid's eighth book falls for her during the hunt for the Calydonian boar and gives her the beast's hide, provoking a quarrel with his own kin. The woodcut comes from an edition of Ovid's *Metamorphoses* printed at Lyons in 1557, when that city was a major center for illustrated books. Such cuts condensed mythic episodes into compact scenes that readers could study alongside the Latin text. The date and caption details come from old, unverified records, so confirm them before citing.
