Rather than showing the writer himself, this small photograph records the study where Leo Tolstoy worked at Yasnaya Polyana, his family estate south of Moscow in the Tula region. The Russian caption names the room and the estate, and the record dates the picture to May 1908, when Tolstoy was 79 and still writing there. He did much of his work in rooms like this one, including parts of *War and Peace* and *Anna Karenina*, and by the late 1900s the estate drew many visitors and admirers. The photograph shows that the desk and its surroundings were central to his writing life.
