Few American fortunes of the nineteenth century rival that of Cornelius Vanderbilt, known as "the Commodore" from his early years running steamboats in New York waters. Born on Staten Island in 1794, he built a shipping business and later turned to railroads, consolidating lines into the New York Central system that linked New York City with the Midwest. This portrait, credited to a photographer named Howell, shows a man whose wealth made him one of the most powerful figures in the country. The caption card gives no date, so the sitting is best understood within his long career rather than pinned to a specific year.
