The Russian title, *Na chastnykh gonkakh*, roughly means "On the private timber drives," a phrase that points to rafts run by private firms rather than the state. The setting is the Volga-Baltic Waterway, the chain of rivers, lakes and canals that linked the Volga basin with the Baltic coast of the Russian Empire. Floating cut logs downstream in lashed rafts was a common way to move timber to markets and sawmills, and the work was slow, labor-intensive and dependent on water levels. Dated 1909 in the record, this small album print documents that trade at a time when the waterway was still a vital route for bulk cargo.
