A caption card of uncertain reliability gives this 1930 print its blunt claim that Stalin was the undisputed master of the USSR, a phrase that reads more like outside commentary than neutral description. By 1930 he had outmaneuvered his rivals inside the Communist Party, Leon Trotsky had been expelled from the Soviet Union in 1929, and the First Five-Year Plan and forced collectivization of farms were reshaping the country. Because the record is unverified, the picture is best read as an outside view of Soviet power at that moment, with the caption's wording weighed against what the image itself shows.
