Variety, the New York trade paper covering theater and show business, ran this headline on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 1929, the day after the stock market's collapse on Black Tuesday. "Laying an egg" was stage slang for a flop, so the paper used its own vocabulary to describe Wall Street's failure. Its appearance in a show-business publication shows how far the crash's impact reached beyond the financial district, into theaters, newsrooms and households across the country.
