Workers at a Pittsburgh blast furnace are shown moving pig iron, the rough bars of metal that poured out of the furnace and cooled in sand molds. Pittsburgh was among the country's leading centers of steel and iron production around 1905, when the city's mills and furnaces fed railroads, bridges and building projects across the nation. This stereograph, issued by the Keystone View Company, was one of many scenes sold for viewing through stereoscopes, which gave ordinary households a glimpse of heavy industry. The record notes it as relating to the steel industry, though the caption details are unverified.
