Few pictures in this set show the working machinery of an ironworks as plainly as this side elevation of the blowing engine at Shelton Colliery and Iron-works. Its flat, measured view lets a reader see the engine's full profile, which was the kind of drawing engineers used to study and compare machines. Blowing engines of this sort, usually steam-driven, forced a steady blast of air into blast furnaces, so the engine was central to the smelting process. The caption card gives no date, so the drawing's exact period is uncertain, but the subject points to the mid-19th-century iron industry of the English Midlands.
