The Edgar Thomson Works, a steel plant on the Monongahela River at Braddock, Pennsylvania, is shown here as a wide panoramic view, a format the Detroit Publishing Company favored for industrial scenes around 1908. The mill was named for Edgar Thomson, longtime president of the Pennsylvania Railroad, and was built in 1875 by Andrew Carnegie's steel company, which made it one of the key works of the region's steel industry. Notice how the mill's long rows of buildings and stacks dominate the riverside, a reminder of how completely the steel trade shaped towns like Braddock in the early twentieth century.
