The view looks east across the Gould & Curry Works, one of the early mining operations on the Comstock Lode near Virginia City, Nevada. The Comstock's silver and gold strikes drew a rush of prospectors and investors to the region in the late 1850s and 1860s, and the mills and hoisting works that rose along the slopes were the visible signs of that boom. The print is one half of a stereograph pair from a series titled *Gems of California Scenery*, though only this side survives in the collection. Stereo views like this were sold widely in the 1860s, and they offer a close look at how a working mining site was laid out in its early years.
