Rather than the battlefield itself, this image shows the burial of Major General Edward Braddock, the British commander who died in 1755 after his column was ambushed near the Monongahela River during the French and Indian War. The scene recalls the story that his men buried him in a road so that wagons and marching troops would pass over the grave and keep it from being found. John McNevin's painting dates from the 1850s and was later engraved, and this photographic reproduction was made from that engraving in the 1980s, so it carries a century-old interpretation of a 1750s event.
