This engraving shows Philip Schuyler, the New York officer who commanded the Continental Army's Northern Department in 1775 and 1776 before Horatio Gates took over the command. The print is based on a miniature John Trumbull painted around 1792, and it was reproduced decades later, in the 1830s, by the engraver T. Kelly, who added a facsimile of Schuyler's signature below the title. Schuyler's role in the Saratoga campaign and his later service in the U.S. Senate make him a useful figure for understanding the Revolution in the North.
