This engraving reproduces the death warrant of Major John André, the British officer captured in September 1780 while carrying documents from Benedict Arnold, who was plotting to surrender the fortress at West Point. A board of American officers convicted André as a spy, and the warrant ordering his execution is the document shown here. He was hanged at Tappan, New York, on October 2, 1780, a sentence that drew sympathy in Britain and became a lasting part of the Revolutionary War story. The print, made around 1859, reflects the nineteenth-century interest in preserving such documents.
