This title page for the *Continental Almanac* of 1780 is decorated with an allegorical engraving of patriotic emblems rather than the plain type and tables common to the form. Almanacs were among the most widely read books in colonial and early American homes, carrying calendars, weather and tide tables, and practical advice alongside poetry and jokes. By 1780 the war had dragged on for five years and Continental currency had lost most of its value, so printers hoping to rally readers often turned to symbols of liberty and unity. The engraving shows how the familiar almanac format could carry a political message.
