Its Dutch title, *Loon na werk*, translates roughly as "wages for work," which suggests a satire about payment owed for services rendered. The 1780 mezzotint is catalogued among Dutch political satires, and its subject headings tie it to international relations, assault and battery, and the American Revolution. That year Dutch merchants were trading with the American rebels while tensions with Britain climbed, and by December Britain had declared war on the Dutch Republic. Prints like this one show how Dutch readers were following that quarrel.
