A London engraving dedicated to Rear Admiral Sir William Burnaby, commander in chief of British ships at Jamaica and in the Gulf of Mexico, gives this view of Pensacola its particular character. George Gauld, a surveyor and naval draftsman who charted the Florida coast for the Royal Navy, made the plate, and Thomas Jefferys sold it in the Strand. Pensacola had been the seat of British West Florida since 1763 and served as a naval base until Spanish forces under Bernardo de Gálvez took the town in 1781. The print is catalogued among Revolution-era graphics, though its subject is the British outpost and its harbor.
