This engraving shows Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, from the southwest, a vantage that distinguishes it from views of the town taken from other directions. Bethlehem was founded in 1741 by Moravian settlers, who built their community around a central church and a set of communal buildings, and a town view like this one offered outsiders a look at that planned layout. The title gives the year 1784, but the caption card records no date, so that year rests on the title alone. Engraved town views like this were often used to document growing communities in the early republic.
