Engraved by Birrell after a painting by Benjamin West, this plate shows Samuel Hood, the Royal Navy officer who later became Viscount Hood. The source canvas was then in the possession of Sir John Dick, and J. Fielding published the engraving in London in June 1785. It appeared as a plate in John Andrews' multivolume *History of the War with America, France, Spain, and Holland*. Hood served in the American war, including at the Chesapeake in 1781 and the Battle of the Saintes in 1782, so the print honors a naval commander from a conflict that had ended only two years earlier.
