John Randolph of Roanoke was one of the most recognizable figures in early national politics, a Virginia congressman and senator whose lanky frame and sharp tongue made him a fixture of Washington debate in the early 1800s. He took his name from his family's Roanoke estate in Charlotte County, Virginia, and was known for his defense of states' rights and his cutting, often personal attacks on opponents. This print, dated around 1876, was made more than four decades after his death in 1833, so it reflects how later generations pictured him. The catalog card links the work to the engraver John Sartain, though that attribution is unverified.
