This print takes its title from the death of Sitting Bull, the Hunkpapa Lakota leader who was killed on the Standing Rock Reservation in December 1890 when reservation police tried to arrest him. The arrest came amid federal alarm over the Ghost Dance movement, which many officials feared as a sign of unrest. The record links the image to the Chicago firm Kurz & Allison, known for popular illustrated scenes of the American West, and lists a copyright entry in early January 1891, though that date is unverified. Such prints reached a wide public soon after the events they depicted, shaping how many Americans understood the episode.
