Published in Harper's Weekly on March 13, 1869, this wood engraving marks the close of Andrew Johnson's presidency, which ended on March 4 when Ulysses S. Grant took office. The title casts Johnson as a "bogus Caesar," evoking the Roman leader whose ambitions were seen as a threat to the republic, and the timing of the Ides of March lends the title its dramatic irony. Johnson had survived Senate impeachment by a single vote in May 1868, and cartoons like this one often treated his political fall as a kind of assassination. The page number and date show how weekly illustrated journals drew on classical allusion to comment on current events.
